I have had a long love affair with food, eating, cooking and of course, cookbooks. A few years ago, I bought a new cookbook which happened to have Ayurveda based recipes. This marked the start of my Ayurveda journey. After trying out some dishes and reading more about this system of health I was hooked. I especially liked the importance placed on food and digestion and how the individual and their environment/situation are central to food and lifestyle recommendations. For example, different types of food can help you feel balanced depending on the time of year, the season and also depending on how you are feeling.
After buying & reading a lot of ayurveda related books, listening to multiple podcasts and trying out many recipes, I started searching for even more information. One day, I stumbled upon the Ayurvedic Nutrition Course given by the Delight Academy and signed up!
Below i’ll share with you my main highlights/summary of the course:
In the course, we covered Ayurvedic principles including the tridosha theory, the qualities of food, the six tastes, digestion from an ayurvedic perspective, food related lifestyle advice and more.
The program consisted of self study, classes (roughly 2 Fridays per month) in person and online, in class assignments and home assignments.
The teacher Liese is super knowledgeable, patient and open. Her experience as an Ayurvedic Practitioner as well as her passion for whole, pure foods results in a super engaging and informative class.
The course is a nice mix of theory and practical. A typical class day includes a presentation from the teacher (which is usually very interactive), group discussions and group assignments. For example, we have practised assessing recipes together and trying to assess the tastes of different food types.
It was amazing to be surrounded by a group of enthusiastic students with similar interests. There were many opportunities for us to get to know each other better, talk about food and share tips.
The original location of the course was at the beautiful PrinsenEiland Studio. Even though its centrally located, it has a small quaint village like feel surrounded by beautiful old traditional Dutch houses- great for a short walk! Due to Corona we had to switch to virtual meetings which were also very effective and engaging.
The cooking assignments were a big highlight for me! It was great learning more about the qualities & tastes of food and practising how to identify, balance and adjust these according to different circumstances.
Overall, I really enjoyed the classes, conversations and food! I feel like I have a better understanding of how to make helpful food choices for myself and also how to create more balanced meals. I think it's a great course if you are both new to Ayurveda and also already have some knowledge. Its also great, if you have an interest in food and nutrition.
